The Carlyle Hotel is home to Bemelmans Bar…and Bemelmans Bar is home to Ludwig Bemelmen’s famous murals. Bemelman himself called The Carlyle Hotel his home for a short time in 1940’s. As the story goes…Bemelman created these murals in exchange for free rooms in the hotel.

His vision: show Central Park across all four seasons.

You can spot little girls in party dresses throughout the bar…and occasionally the one who made Bemelman famous in the first place: Madeline.

Speaking of party dresses…you will want to make sure you have your own before entering Bemelmans. There is a ‘smart dress code’ policy that starts at 5:30pm.

Shirts are required. No shorts or hats.

In addition to the dress code…there is also a cover charge once the music starts at 5:30pm. The cost covers the live entertainment throughout the night by either a pianist or jazz trio.

$10 per person for the pianist that starts at 5:30pm

$15-$20 per person for the jazz trio (for those seated at the bar)

$25-$35 per person for the jazz trio (for those seated at tables)

Don’t let the cost of entertainment deter you from visiting Bemelmans Bar. It has 4.4 stars on Google and over 470 reviews. Pricing is ranked $$$ (expensive) but is the ultimate atmosphere for a swanky New York City evening. Bemelmans Famous cocktails cost $21, shared plates for the table range between $24-$29 (excluding the caviar that goes for $175-$285 per ounce…).

Bemelmans Bar opens daily at 12p. On Sunday and Monday it is open until 12a, from Tuesday to Thursday until 12:30a and Friday and Saturday until 1am.

Drinks are served during those times. The food menu is served from 4pm-10:30pm. The menu is intended to be shared so make sure that you come with friends. There is a drink and snack waiting for everyone at Bemelmans Bar.
