Clean, Fresh, Good Food in the East Village

Hearth offers generous portions that will fill you up and make you feel good in a relaxed and homey atmosphere that will have you ordering a second bottle of wine.  Located on 12th Street between 1st and Avenue A…but closer to 1st.  The 1st Ave & 14th Street subway station (L train) is a short 2 block walk and the M15 bus stop is on the next corner.  You can also take the 4,5,6 or N,R,Q trains to Union Square and walk about 10 minutes.  You may also want to consider visiting Hearth on the High Line but be aware that the menu and hours differ.  The details below are only for the East Village location.

The brunch menu at Hearth East Village is available Saturday and Sunday and is served from 12p-3p.  To start or to add to your main dish you can order a scone, sourdough bread, squash dish, salad with asparagus and radish, and ricotta toast.  The main brunch menu offers buckwheat pancakes (with strawberry compote and maple syrup), tomato and egg, a hearty “hungry chef’s” breakfast (fried eggs, bacon, squash, polenta), a sprint frittata (maitake, squash, parm), and meatballs (grass-fed beef and ricotta over polenta).  Additional sides include home fries (with caramelized onions and leeks), crispy bacon, and breakfast sausage).  The current menu stresses that the Variety Burger is not available at brunch and that you will need to visit during weekly lunch service or daily dinner service to order.

The lunch and dinner menu offers a traditional a la carte menu but you can also choose to order a family style meal that includes 9 dishes and four courses, with the option to add a wine pairing.  We do not have more information on what is included but it is safe to assume it is something fresh and special.    The main menu is broken down into bread and snacks, vegetables, grains, fish, meat, dishes for 2 or more, and sides for the table.  Since Hearth only uses the freshest ingredients, their menu is most likely subject to change with the seasons and availability of produce.  Please check out their website for an up to date menu here.

Hearth East Village has over 700 reviews on Google and 4.4 stars.  The most highly rated meal was the tasting menu/family style meal which varies based on availability but seems to include vegetable dishes, pasta dishes, meatballs, fish, polenta, and a dessert.  Brunch is also highly recommended with guests commenting that although the menu is limited, everything is delicious.  Others rated the meatballs as five stars and luckily the meatballs are on the brunch menu so you can enjoy them regardless of when you chose to visit.  Other notables were the gnocchi, fava beans, garlic bread, pork, ricotta, and cod, but keep in mind that menu items are seasonal and may not be available at your time of dining.

The lunch and dinner menu is the same so don’t worry about missing anything if you can only go for lunch or dinner.  Lunch is served from 2p-5p Wednesday through Friday.  Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday 12p-3p.  Dinner starts at 5p daily.  Sunday through Thursday the last seating is 9pm while Friday and Saturday last seating is 10p.  You can order online for either pick up or delivery (link here).  Reservations can be made via Resy.

Hearth East Village was featured in @deuxmoi’s Sunday Spotted on 6/25/2023 when a fan spotted Emma Roberts dining there.  It is not clear when exactly this was but it was during the week of 6/18/-6/25.
