Spike Lee’s annual “BK Loves MJ” Michael Jackson block party returns to Fort Greene Park this Saturday, August 29, celebrating what would have been the King of Pop’s 68th birthday. The seven-hour extravaganza runs from noon to 7 p.m., and the best part? It’s completely free.
Because apparently Spike Lee believes the proper way to celebrate Michael Jackson is not with a quiet dinner and a birthday cake, but by turning Fort Greene into one giant dance floor.
DJ Spinna will provide the soundtrack, spinning Michael Jackson classics, Jackson 5 favorites and plenty of music guaranteed to make even the most rhythmically challenged New Yorker reconsider their decision to wear loafers. Jordan Brand is also partnering on this year’s celebration.
The party has become a beloved Brooklyn tradition, dating back to 2009, and Lee has remained closely connected to Jackson’s legacy. The filmmaker directed Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” music video and later made documentaries celebrating the singer’s music and career.
This year’s party also arrives amid renewed interest in Jackson following the success of the Michael biopic, introducing his music and story to a new generation of fans.
So, if you’re looking for something to do in NYC this weekend, forget overpriced clubs and reservations that require a small mortgage.
