New York has thousands of hot dog carts. But only one can reasonably be described as haute.

Outside The Mark Hotel on East 77th Street, the famously stylish Mark Haute Dog Cart has turned the humble New York hot dog into an Upper East Side luxury experience. Because naturally, the neighborhood that brought us couture, penthouses and $20 juices was eventually going to put a designer spin on a frankfurter.

The black-and-white striped cart, designed to match The Mark’s signature aesthetic, serves gourmet hot dogs created by celebrated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The hotel says the dogs are made with organic chicken and grass-fed beef and served with special kimchi relish and classic condiments.

Yes, kimchi relish.

This is not your midnight street-corner hot dog—although nobody is stopping you from eating it with the same level of enthusiasm.

The Haute Dog Cart is available daily, weather permitting, generally from late morning through the afternoon. The Mark currently lists its hours as approximately 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., giving Upper East Siders, hotel guests and hungry passersby plenty of time to make a detour.

The cart has also become something of a celebrity favorite and a fixture around the hotel, which sits just steps from Central Park. The Mark’s glamorous reputation—and its connections to fashion and entertainment—have helped turn an everyday New York snack into a surprisingly photogenic food moment.

And there’s something wonderfully New York about the whole thing.

A hot dog doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be good. The Mark simply decided that good could also wear a tuxedo.

So the next time you’re strolling around Madison Avenue and craving a bite, skip the stuffy restaurant reservation.

Follow the striped cart.
