Times Square is about to get a lot more interesting—and considerably more delicious. Sushiro, Japan’s massive conveyor-belt sushi chain, is opening its first U.S. location in New York City this October, bringing its famously fast, affordable and highly automated sushi experience to Midtown Manhattan.
The new Sushiro NYC will take over a massive three-story, roughly 9,000-square-foot space at 667 Eighth Avenue at West 42nd Street, right next to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The location was previously home to a McDonald’s, but diners can expect a very different kind of fast food experience when Sushiro arrives.
And yes, there will be plenty of sushi flying by—literally. The restaurant will feature conveyor-belt dining on the first and second floors, with approximately 150 seats, while the basement will include private dining rooms. Customers will order from large digital screens and have their selections delivered via the conveyor system.
The menu is expected to feature more than 200 items, ranging from classic sushi and sashimi to noodles, sides and desserts. Prices will start at around $5 per plate, with bluefin otoro expected to cost about $10. Even better for New Yorkers who have grown accustomed to tipping just about everyone: Sushiro says tipping will not be required.
Founded in Japan in 1984, Sushiro has grown into a global sushi powerhouse with hundreds of locations worldwide. Now, its first American restaurant is landing in one of the busiest neighborhoods on Earth.
Basically, Times Square just got another reason to be crowded—and this time, it involves tuna instead of tourists taking selfies.
