Williamsburg has coffee shops, natural wine bars, artisanal sandwiches and enough places serving $19 eggs to fill several blocks. What it apparently needs now is something much simpler: a diner.
A new Williamsburg diner is coming to South 4th Street, taking over the former Taqueria Casa Imelda space near Berry and Wythe Streets. The news has already sparked plenty of excitement among locals, who appear united on one important point: please, for the love of pancakes, make it an actual diner.
Details remain relatively scarce, but neighborhood chatter suggests the new restaurant is targeting a June 2026 opening and could operate 24 hours a day. The owners have reportedly described plans for affordable prices, although Williamsburg residents have understandably learned to treat the word “affordable” with the same skepticism they reserve for a $7 oat-milk latte.
The location at 82 South 4th Street previously housed Taqueria Casa Imelda, which has since closed.
And the timing couldn’t be better. Williamsburg has developed a renewed appetite for the classic diner experience, particularly as the neighborhood’s beloved institutions continue to evolve. Kellogg’s Diner, for example, returned with a major makeover and eventually restored 24-hour service, blending diner classics with Tex-Mex influences.
But locals seem to want something different from another Instagram-ready restaurant masquerading as a diner. The reaction to the new Williamsburg Diner has been remarkably consistent: pancakes, burgers, coffee, late-night food and prices that don’t require a financial advisor.
That’s the dream.
Because sometimes after a night out, nobody wants a tasting menu. Nobody wants to discuss the provenance of the salt. And nobody wants to wait three weeks for a reservation.
They want eggs at 2 a.m.
If the new Williamsburg Diner delivers on that, it could become exactly what the neighborhood has been missing.
