If you’re suddenly seeing KATSEYE everywhere, no, your algorithm hasn’t completely lost its mind. The global girl group has been having a very big year—and their Saturday Night Live debut just gave them another massive platform.
KATSEYE was created through The Debut: Dream Academy, a joint project between HYBE and Geffen Records that attracted an astonishing 120,000 applications before narrowing the field to 20 contestants. Six ultimately became KATSEYE: Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia and Yoonchae.
Here’s the fascinating part: KATSEYE was deliberately built as a global group rather than a traditional K-pop act. Its members came from six different cities across three continents, with backgrounds spanning the United States, Switzerland, the Philippines and South Korea. The group’s development used K-pop-style training methods, but its music and identity are designed for an international pop audience.
The name itself has a suitably sparkly explanation. A cat’s-eye gemstone can appear to radiate different colors depending on the direction it’s viewed from—an idea the group uses as a metaphor for six distinct personalities becoming one group.
KATSEYE released its debut single, “Debut,” in June 2024, followed by SIS (Soft Is Strong). Its second EP, BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200, giving the group its first U.S. top-10 album.
Now the group is entering another chapter with WILD, its third EP, and a sold-out WILDWORLD tour. And on September 26, KATSEYE made its SNL debut as the musical guest alongside host Jalen Brunson.
So what is KATSEYE?
Part pop group, part international experiment, part very successful internet phenomenon.
Basically, six passports, one group—and absolutely no plans to stay in one lane.
