New York has no shortage of Indian restaurants, but Musaafer NYC clearly did not get the memo about keeping things understated.
Located at 133 Duane Street in Tribeca, Musaafer is the New York outpost of the Houston-born Indian restaurant that earned a Michelin star in Texas. The NYC location opened in 2025 inside the historic Hope Building and sprawls across roughly 10,000 square feet—because apparently dinner needed its own real estate portfolio.
The restaurant’s whole philosophy is built around the idea of a journey across India, with dishes inspired by regional cuisines and ingredients from across the country. That means this is not your neighborhood curry-and-naan situation. Expect contemporary interpretations, theatrical presentations, and plenty of dishes designed to make the table stop talking for a second.
And then there is the room.
Musaafer NYC was designed by Delhi-based Chromed Studio, with interiors inspired by Indian architecture and landmarks. Marble, intricate patterns, dramatic chandeliers and a mirrored Sheesh Mahal room make the restaurant feel considerably more like a palace than a Tribeca dining room.
One of the more unexpected menu items is the Nihari Birria Taco, which takes slow-cooked lamb shank, Indian cheddar, red onion and bone marrow consommé and essentially asks: what if India and Mexico had a very glamorous dinner party?
There’s also the restaurant’s famous Butter Chicken Experience, along with dishes such as coriander shrimp, lamb chops and Khasi black sesame cod.
The name itself is fitting: Musaafer means traveler. And after dinner here, your waistband may feel like it has completed a journey of its own.
Musaafer NYC: come for Indian fine dining, stay for the architecture, and definitely leave room for dessert.
