There are long waits in New York, and then there is Lucali—where waiting for pizza can become an activity unto itself.
Located at 575 Henry Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, the legendary pizzeria has developed a reputation for serving some of NYC’s most sought-after pizza. It has also developed another reputation: making hungry people wait. Sometimes for two to four hours.
And somehow, people keep showing up.
Lucali doesn’t take traditional reservations. Instead, the restaurant begins taking names for its same-day waitlist at 4 p.m., with dinner service beginning at 5 p.m. The official restaurant site says it’s first-come, first-served, meaning your dinner plans basically begin with a strategic visit to Henry Street before you’ve technically had dinner.
The payoff is a famously simple menu: pizza, calzones and a handful of toppings. The signature large pie comes with basil, while toppings include pepperoni, garlic, onion, shallot, hot peppers, mushrooms and more. The restaurant is also BYOB and cash only, so come prepared—both financially and emotionally.
The wait can be substantial. Time Out documented arriving around 3:30 p.m., getting on the list shortly after 4 p.m., and ultimately waiting hours before returning for the table. Condé Nast Traveler similarly notes that the wait for a Lucali table can stretch from an hour to three.
So, is Lucali worth a four-hour wait?
That’s the million-dollar—or at least $32-pizza—question.
For pizza obsessives, the answer may be yes. For everyone else, Brooklyn has plenty of excellent pizza that doesn’t require turning dinner into a half-day commitment.
But if you’re determined to experience Lucali pizza in Brooklyn, bring cash, bring a bottle, bring patience—and maybe bring a book.
Because at Lucali, the wait is practically on the menu.
