Anthony Bourdain built his television career on a simple philosophy: when it comes to food, try almost anything once. Across No Reservations, A Cook’s Tour, and Parts Unknown, the legendary chef ate his way through some seriously strange dishes, proving that his appetite for adventure was almost as impressive as his appetite for lunch.
Here are some of the weirdest things Anthony Bourdain ate on camera.
Still-Beating Cobra Heart
In Vietnam, Bourdain famously swallowed a still-beating cobra heart as part of an elaborate cobra meal. The experience also included cobra blood, meat, soup and bile. Even for Bourdain, the bile was particularly memorable—and not in a good way.
Raw Seal Eyeball
During No Reservations in Quebec, Bourdain sampled raw seal, including the eyeball. Somehow, the famously unflappable chef didn’t seem particularly horrified by it. In fact, the seal eyeball was hardly his worst food experience.
Warthog Rectum
This may be the undisputed champion of Anthony Bourdain’s worst meals. While visiting Namibia, Bourdain ate warthog prepared by local Bushmen. The meat—and particularly the rectum—was covered in sand, fur and other unpleasant remnants of the animal’s environment. Bourdain later described the experience as among the worst things he had ever eaten.
Fermented Shark
Then there was Iceland’s infamous fermented shark, a traditional delicacy with an aroma powerful enough to challenge even Bourdain’s legendary stomach. He later counted it among the foods he had no desire to revisit.
Guinea Pig and Other Oddities
Bourdain also sampled guinea pig, sheep testicles, ant eggs, stinky tofu and other unusual regional specialties throughout his travels.
The real appeal wasn’t shock value. Bourdain ate these foods because they mattered to the people serving them. His willingness to take the bite—no matter how bizarre—turned weird food and travel television into something far more memorable: a lesson in curiosity, respect and saying, “Well, I guess I’m eating this.”
