Woody Allen is heading back to Spain, and this time he’s trading Barcelona and San Sebastián for Madrid. The legendary filmmaker is preparing his new movie in Spain, with production scheduled to begin in Madrid on October 5, 2026. The project is currently known by the wonderfully mysterious working title WASP 2026.
The film will be Allen’s 51st feature as a writer and director and his first movie shot in Madrid. While the plot and cast remain largely under wraps, the project has been described as a contemporary ensemble romantic comedy with Madrid playing a starring role. In other words, expect complicated relationships, neurotic characters and plenty of people talking very quickly about their romantic problems—now with better tapas.
Madrid is clearly not being treated as mere scenery. The production is required to showcase recognizable locations throughout the region, and the word “Madrid” must appear in the film’s eventual title. The city and regional governments are also supporting the production financially as part of a broader push to promote Madrid as an international film and tourism destination.
This will be Allen’s third movie filmed in Spain. He previously turned Barcelona into a cinematic playground with Vicky Cristina Barcelona, while Rifkin’s Festival brought his particular brand of romantic confusion to San Sebastián.
For Madrid, the timing could hardly be more convenient. Allen’s films have long turned cities into characters of their own, and now Madrid gets its chance to join New York, Paris, Rome and Barcelona in his cinematic passport.
The movie is expected to receive an international release and make the festival circuit. So, Madrid, prepare yourself: Woody Allen is coming—and apparently everyone is about to have feelings about it.
