New York City has exported plenty of things to Nashville over the years—fashion, finance, influencers who suddenly own cowboy boots—but now it’s sending something far more important: pierogi.
Beloved Ukrainian restaurant Veselka has officially expanded to Nashville, marking the iconic NYC institution’s first expansion market in its 72-year history. The new outpost is located inside Lakeside Lounge at 921 Woodland St. in East Nashville.
For New Yorkers, Veselka needs little introduction. The East Village institution has been serving Ukrainian comfort food since 1954, becoming a neighborhood staple for everyone from late-night revelers to politicians, celebrities and hungry people who believe potatoes belong inside dough.
Now Nashville gets a taste of the magic.
The Nashville location brings Veselka’s Ukrainian-inspired fare into a city already famous for its own obsession with comfort food. And while Nashville has no shortage of hot chicken, barbecue and biscuits, there’s always room for a perfectly stuffed pierogi—especially after a few hours on Broadway.
The move also feels like a particularly New York way to expand: don’t reinvent the wheel, just take the wheel to Tennessee.
Veselka’s Nashville debut comes as the city continues attracting major restaurant names from New York, Los Angeles and beyond. The East Nashville location gives locals and visitors another reason to venture beyond the honky-tonk crowds—and perhaps discover that the perfect post-party meal doesn’t always need to involve fried chicken.
Veselka has spent decades proving that Ukrainian soul food can become a New York institution. Now the restaurant is betting Nashville is ready for the same treatment.
So, Nashville, welcome to the wonderful world of pierogi. Just don’t expect New Yorkers to surrender their favorite table without a fight.
