The fashion world just got a very un-Met-like plot twist: John Galliano’s Met exhibit has been canceled, and the reason goes far beyond a simple change of plans.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that its planned 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, “John Galliano: Horizons,” will no longer go forward. The retrospective was supposed to celebrate Galliano’s four-decade career and serve as the centerpiece of next year’s Met Gala.
So, what really happened?
The short answer: backlash became too big to couture away.
Galliano remains one of fashion’s most influential designers, with legendary stints at Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela. But his career also includes a deeply controversial chapter. In 2011, videos surfaced showing Galliano making antisemitic and racist remarks in Paris. He was subsequently fired from Dior and convicted by a French court of public insults based on religion, race and ethnicity.
Galliano has apologized repeatedly, undergone rehabilitation and spent years rebuilding his career. The Met had planned to address the controversy as part of the exhibition rather than ignore it.
But critics weren’t buying the idea of turning a complicated history into one of fashion’s biggest honors.
Jewish leaders and New York officials publicly objected to the exhibition, while reports indicated that some Met donors threatened to withdraw financial support if the show proceeded. The timing also created another headache: the 2027 Met Gala was scheduled to fall on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day.
That combination turned a fashion retrospective into a major cultural controversy.
Galliano ultimately said he did not want the debate surrounding him to put the Met in a difficult position. He also acknowledged that genuine atonement isn’t achieved through one glamorous museum exhibition.
Translation: the Met Gala needed a theme, not a diplomatic crisis.
The Met says a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala theme will be announced later. For now, Galliano’s comeback has hit another very public runway roadblock.
