New York City already has plenty of bright ideas, but Illumination NYC is bringing some actual light to the party.
The free Illumination Light Art Festival returns to Wagner Park in Battery Park City from September 17 through September 19, transforming the Lower Manhattan waterfront into a giant outdoor canvas of light, art, music and projection mapping. And, because this is New York, the skyline is basically doing half the decorating for free.
Running nightly from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., the 2026 festival will feature more than 10 large-scale light installations created by artists from New York and around the world. Expect interactive artwork, immersive projections, live performances and DJs—all set against the Hudson River and downtown skyline.
In other words, it’s the rare NYC event where you can say you’re going to an art festival and actually mean it.
Illumination NYC was created as a free public celebration designed to bring large-scale light art to New Yorkers and visitors alike. The nonprofit festival has made a name for itself by combining technology, visual art and nightlife into an experience that feels part gallery, part concert and part extremely Instagrammable fever dream.
This year’s return also marks the fifth anniversary of Illumination NYC, making the 2026 edition something of a birthday party—only instead of cake, you’re getting giant glowing installations and projection mapping.
Saturday night will add another reason to stick around: a silent disco featuring three DJs, with wireless headphones turning the waterfront into a dance floor where everyone appears to be dancing to music only they can hear. Which, honestly, is not that different from walking around Manhattan on a Saturday night.
Food trucks will be nearby, and beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission to the festival itself is free, making it one of the better bargains on the NYC events calendar this fall.
So grab your friends, wear something neon and head downtown.
