New York City has no shortage of competitive eating contests, but few are quite as comforting as the pierogi eating contest. Because if you’re going to test the limits of your stomach, you might as well do it with potato, cheese and buttery onions.

The NYC pierogi eating contest is the kind of event that turns Poland’s beloved dumpling into a full-blown sporting event. Contestants sit down, plates pile up and the goal is simple: eat as many pierogi as possible before time runs out.

And don’t let the innocent-looking dumplings fool you. Pierogi may look like adorable little pillows, but a few dozen of them can turn into a serious gastrointestinal marathon.

Brooklyn has already developed a reputation for pierogi challenges, thanks in part to Pierozek in Greenpoint, located in the heart of NYC’s Polish community. The restaurant has become known for handmade pierogi, including classic potato-and-cheese, sauerkraut-and-mushroom and meat varieties.

In fact, competitive eater Wayne “wayneywonder” Algenio won a 2025 Brooklyn pierogi eating contest by consuming 76 pierogi in five minutes, taking home a $500 prize. That’s roughly one pierogi every four seconds—which is either impressive or a compelling reason to schedule a nap afterward.

Pierogi eating contests aren’t exactly limited to New York, either. Polish festivals around the country have turned the dumpling into competitive entertainment, with contests often giving participants just a few minutes to consume as many as humanly possible.

For spectators, it’s part food festival, part sporting event and part reminder that New Yorkers will turn literally anything into a competition.

For contestants, meanwhile, the strategy is simple: eat fast, stay focused and hope your pants have an elastic waistband.

Because in NYC, apparently even comfort food comes with a finish line.
