The team behind Taquería Ramírez and Carnitas Ramírez is diving headfirst into seafood. El Camarón Peludo is now open in the West Village, bringing Mexican seafood, Champagne and plenty of micheladas to 20 Cornelia Street.
The name translates to “the hairy shrimp,” which is exactly the kind of wonderfully weird name you would expect from the crew that turned tacos and carnitas into NYC destinations.
The new West Village seafood bar comes from Giovanni Cervantes and Tania Apolinar, with chef Carlos Barrera joining the project. Rather than opening a traditional seafood restaurant, the team leaned into the narrow space and created a compact, bar-focused spot with roughly 25 seats. The bar runs nearly the entire length of the restaurant, making this much more of a seafood-and-wine hangout than a formal dinner destination.
And the seafood is decidedly Mexican.
Based on dishes served at previews, diners can expect things like michelada oysters, aguachile, tuna tostadas, camarones zarandeados and sardine tacos. The cooking also pulls inspiration from Spain, Japan and the U.S., while keeping seafood front and center.
Then there’s the wine.
El Camarón Peludo is designed to be wine-first, with an emphasis on light, refreshing pours, natural wine and Champagne. And, naturally, micheladas are a major part of the equation.
The restaurant officially opened for regular service on September 16, with hours running from 4 p.m. to midnight. Most interior seating is first-come, first-served, so you may want to arrive early—or embrace the possibility of turning “one drink” into an entire seafood dinner.
For anyone searching for new West Village restaurants, Mexican seafood in NYC, NYC seafood bars or the best new restaurants in Greenwich Village, add this shrimp to your radar.
