ete Davidson has a question for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani—and naturally, it involves Staten Island.
The comedian and Staten Island native recently questioned whether Mamdani really has the borough’s heart, adding a fresh dose of celebrity commentary to New York City politics. During an interview with Variety, Davidson was asked whether Mamdani should qualify as “Staten Island.” His answer? A decidedly skeptical “I don’t know.”
Davidson went on to say that he does not think Mamdani is “Staten Island at all,” while making clear that his comments were not necessarily about having a personal problem with the mayor. Instead, Davidson framed the issue around the borough’s distinct identity and famously unique political culture.
And if anyone has credentials to weigh in on Staten Island culture, Davidson certainly does. The comedian grew up on the island, starred in The King of Staten Island, and has repeatedly drawn on his hometown experiences in his comedy and entertainment career.
Mamdani, meanwhile, appears to be taking the challenge in stride. When asked about Davidson’s “Staten Island heart” criticism during a NY1 interview, Mamdani offered a decidedly political answer: results. He emphasized delivering for Staten Islanders, including making it easier for residents to build lives, raise families and put down roots in the borough.
The exchange is hardly the first time Davidson has challenged Mamdani. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Davidson previously urged the mayor to tackle the notoriously frustrating Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, prompting Mamdani to discuss a multibillion-dollar plan for the city-owned section.
So, does Mamdani have Staten Island’s heart?
Apparently, the borough’s unofficial celebrity ambassador is still waiting for proof.
In Staten Island, winning hearts may require more than a campaign slogan—it might require surviving the BQE first.
