Another NYC neighborhood institution is calling it last call. Jake’s Dilemma, the beloved Upper West Side sports bar, is closing after 32 years in business, ending an era of cold beers, game-day chaos, late nights and questionable decisions on Amsterdam Avenue.
The bar announced that Jake’s Dilemma will officially close on October 18, 2026, after losing its lease. Located at 430 Amsterdam Avenue between West 80th and West 81st Streets, Jake’s became a fixture of Upper West Side nightlife long before every bar needed a gimmick, a celebrity DJ or a $22 cocktail.
And Jake’s had plenty going for it without trying too hard. The longtime NYC sports bar was known for its 19 draft beers, more than 35 bottled beers, multiple TVs, beer pong, foosball, trivia, live music and weekend DJs. In other words, it was exactly the kind of place where you could show up intending to watch one football game and somehow still be there several hours later.
The closure is particularly painful for longtime Upper West Siders because Jake’s was more than just a place to grab a drink. Over three decades, it became a neighborhood meeting point for first dates, birthdays, friendships, sports victories, sports heartbreaks and the occasional decision that probably seemed better after the third beer.
The bar says it lost its lease, while reports indicate that an unsustainable proposed rent increase contributed to the situation.
Fortunately, the Jake’s Dilemma family isn’t disappearing completely. The bar shares ownership with nearby The Gin Mill, located at 442 Amsterdam Avenue.
Until October 18, there is still time for one final beer, one final game and, naturally, one last dilemma.
Because in NYC, neighborhood bars may close—but the stories they created tend to last a lot longer.
