New York City has seen its share of strange pop-ups, but this one feels like it escaped directly from the Pee-wee’s Playhouse set.
The Pee-wee New York Pop-Up Shop is opening at 213 Bowery, at the corner of Rivington Street, bringing a little more Pee-wee Herman weirdness, nostalgia and wonderfully offbeat fun to the Lower East Side. The limited-run shop opens Wednesday, October 7, through Sunday, October 11, giving fans just five days to get their Pee-wee fix.
The pop-up kicks things off Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. On Sunday, the final day, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is open to the public, so no secret password—or talking furniture—is required.
For fans of Pee-wee Herman, Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Paul Reubens, the temporary shop is an appropriately downtown celebration of one of television’s most wonderfully bizarre characters. Reubens, who created and portrayed Pee-wee Herman, died in 2023 at age 70, but the character’s distinctive blend of surreal humor, childlike enthusiasm and absolute commitment to the bit remains firmly embedded in pop culture.
And honestly, 213 Bowery is almost suspiciously perfect for this. The corner location already has an art-gallery-meets-downtown-pop-up personality, making it an ideal temporary home for Pee-wee’s colorful universe.
Whether you’re a longtime fan who remembers Pee-wee’s Playhouse from Saturday mornings or a younger New Yorker discovering the character for the first time, this is one of those NYC pop-ups that feels considerably more interesting than another beige retail activation.
So head downtown, embrace the bow tie, and prepare for some serious nostalgia.
Because in a city where everything is constantly changing, Pee-wee Herman still knows how to make New York weird—in the best possible way.
