New York City is about to get a serious dose of La Vie Bohème.
Thirty years after Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking musical RENT changed Broadway forever, the beloved rock musical is returning to New York this fall with a very fitting 30th anniversary celebration. And because this is NYC, naturally, it comes with drama, nostalgia, big voices and enough emotional baggage to fill an East Village walk-up.
The centerpiece is a one-night-only RENT 30th Anniversary Gala Concert, taking place Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. The full musical will be performed as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, with original director Michael Greif and the original RENT band returning for the occasion.
Translation: Broadway is bringing the family back together—and hopefully someone remembered the extension cords.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. RENT originally premiered in 1996 and quickly became one of the defining musicals of its generation. Set in New York’s East Village, the story follows a group of artists and friends dealing with love, ambition, poverty, addiction, HIV/AIDS and the eternal question of how anyone is supposed to afford New York City.
Sound familiar?
While the original Broadway production is long gone, RENT has never really left the cultural conversation. Its songs—including “Seasons of Love,” “Take Me or Leave Me” and “La Vie Bohème”—remain theater staples, while its themes of chosen family, creativity and living in the moment continue to resonate.
And there is another major RENT production happening just across the Hudson this fall. Art House Productions in Jersey City is presenting the musical from September 24 through October 18, 2026, as part of its 25th anniversary season.
So yes, RENT is officially having a New York-area moment again.
Thirty years later, the rent is still due.
But for one glorious fall, no day but today.
