One of Midtown Manhattan’s longtime Italian restaurants is back—and it got a serious makeover while it was away.
San Pietro Ristorante has reopened at 18 East 54th Street, unveiling a completely reimagined dining room while keeping the Southern Italian cooking that has made the family-owned restaurant a Midtown fixture since 1992.
The restaurant is owned by brothers Gerardo and Cosimo Bruno, whose family roots in Southern Italy heavily influence the menu. Expect dishes inspired by the cooking of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast, with seafood, handmade pasta, vegetables, meat and plenty of olive oil taking center stage.
But the biggest change is happening around the food.
The newly renovated interior takes inspiration from legendary Italian architect Gio Ponti, with a contemporary mid-century design created by Cicognani Kumpisti Architects. The result is a more polished, modern space that still aims to preserve San Pietro’s old-school Midtown elegance.
In other words, San Pietro didn’t exactly reinvent itself.
It just decided to get a better outfit.
The restaurant’s menu continues to feature Italian classics and seafood favorites, including branzino, homemade pastas, octopus, veal, eggplant parmigiana and other Southern Italian specialties. The restaurant also has an expanded bar area, making it a natural stop for an after-work cocktail before dinner—or a pre-theater drink before heading toward Broadway.
San Pietro has also expanded its dining options, with private dining for groups and corporate events, while its location between Madison and Fifth Avenue keeps it firmly planted in the heart of Midtown.
