Never been to the Metropolitan Opera? Your excuse just got dramatically weaker.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Metropolitan Opera have launched “Opera for All,” a new initiative offering 70,000 free Met Opera tickets to New Yorkers during the 2026–27 season. And unlike the usual Broadway lottery where you’re hoping for a seat somewhere behind a decorative column, these tickets will be available across the Met’s auditorium. Standing room is the one exception.
Here’s the important part: 10,000 free tickets will be released every month throughout the season. New Yorkers can enter the lottery online at the city’s Opera for All site or through the Met’s app.
There’s also a major eligibility catch. The program is aimed at New Yorkers who haven’t experienced the Met before, and any New Yorker who has not purchased a Metropolitan Opera ticket since 2019 can enter the lottery.
And what can you see? The 2026–27 season includes productions such as Macbeth, Lincoln in the Bardo and La Bohème, giving lottery winners the chance to experience some seriously big-name opera without seriously damaging their bank account.
The program is also expected to continue beyond this season, making this more than a one-night-only cultural experiment. The Met says the initiative will carry into future seasons as well.

Enter the monthly Opera for All lottery at on.nyc.gov/opera or through the Metropolitan Opera app. If you qualify, you’re officially in the running.
No tuxedo required. No opera degree required. And, thankfully, no need to pretend you understand Italian.
