Halloween in New York City is getting a family-friendly makeover in 2026. And thankfully, that means parents can skip the terrifying haunted houses and still give the kids plenty of pumpkins, costumes, candy and general spooky chaos.
This year, Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, making it especially convenient for families looking to pack an entire day of Halloween fun into one very sugar-fueled Saturday.
One of the biggest kid-friendly events is Dumboween: March to the Arch in Brooklyn. The October 31 celebration starts with a costume march accompanied by a brass band before moving into the DUMBO Archway for crafts, music, a costume contest and trick-or-treating at participating businesses.
Over on the Upper West Side, the Hippo Playground Halloween Parade offers a much more toddler-friendly option. Scheduled for Halloween afternoon, the Riverside Park event is designed around younger children who may not be ready for NYC’s massive nighttime Halloween spectacles.
Meanwhile, families on the Upper East Side can head to Asphalt Screams on Friday, October 30. The free event at Asphalt Green includes Halloween activities, family-friendly frights and a haunted maze. There is even a lower-sensory first hour with reduced sound, lighting and crowds.
For something that feels distinctly New York, check out Halloween on the Harlem Meer: Pumpkin Flotilla in Central Park. Families can enjoy Halloween activities before decorated pumpkins take to the water—a surprisingly magical way to celebrate without anyone screaming “I don’t want to go into the haunted house!”
And for families who want maximum Halloween energy, there’s always the Village Halloween Parade. Just remember: its enormous crowds and 7 p.m. start make it better suited to older kids than toddlers.
Because Halloween should be scary—not the logistics of getting three children home after dark.
