In a city where restaurants reinvent themselves every six months, Corner Bistro has seemingly made a different business decision: Don’t mess with a good burger.
The legendary West Village burger bar at 331 W. 4th Street has been serving its famous Bistro Burger for decades, becoming one of those quintessential NYC restaurants that locals, celebrities and hungry tourists all eventually discover. The formula is remarkably simple: burger, bacon, cheese, fries and a cold drink. No foam. No tweezers. No 14-page tasting menu.
The signature Bistro Burger is the star, built around a thick beef patty with cheese and crispy bacon, plus the classic lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. The current menu also includes cheeseburgers, chili burgers, grilled cheese, BLTs, fries, tater tots and a bowl of chili.
And then there’s the atmosphere.
Corner Bistro still embraces its old-school West Village bar identity, with dark wood, low lighting, paper plates and a decidedly unpolished charm. It is the kind of NYC burger joint where you go for the food but stay because the room feels like it has stories.
There’s also some good news for burger fans who don’t want to trek downtown: Corner Bistro now has an East Village location at 94 Avenue A, bringing the institution’s burgers and late-night bar vibe to another Manhattan neighborhood.
One important tip before you go: Corner Bistro is cash only, although an ATM is available inside, and the restaurants do not take reservations.
So, is Corner Bistro fancy?
Absolutely not.
And that’s precisely the point.
In a city obsessed with what’s new, sometimes the best move is still a burger, fries and a beer at a place that refuses to change.
